Teenage musician Luka Coetzee first heard the cello at age one and it was love at first note
'The music has always been part of my life'
Luka Coetzee first heard the cello being played when she was only a year old — and it was love at first note. She remembers growing up in a home where her sisters and mother all played the instrument. "I thought everyone played cello," says Coetzee in this video, part of our Art Kids series. "I was curious when I was little — it seemed fun."
Now, the Calgary teenager spends her time rehearsing at the Honours Academy for Gifted Youth of Mount Royal University Conservatory with her teachers Johanne Perron and John Kadz. And part of that time is spent channelling her feelings about the music into her body language and facial expressions — not a small challenge for a quiet musician.

"The music has always been part of my life," explains Coetzee. But cello isn't her only instrument of choice — she also plays the piano.
The young musician believes that everyone is able to express a unique sound through their instrument and their music. "The sound of the cello is — I feel like it's closest to a human voice so I can relate to it in a way," she says.
"It's a beautiful sound and that's what draws me to the cello."
