Katherena Vermette to publish second novel The Strangers, set in the world of The Break, in fall 2021
Katherena Vermette is working on her second novel, The Strangers, to be released in the fall of 2021.
The book is set in the same world as her bestselling debut novel, The Break, and will feature some of the same characters.
The Break is a multi-voiced narrative, telling the story of a family and community in the aftermath of the sexual assault of a young Métis girl in Winnipeg's North End.
The book won the Amazon.ca First Novel Award, was a finalist for the Governor General's Literary Award for fiction and was defended by Candy Palmater on Canada Reads 2017.
Vermette is an accomplished poet, publishing the collections North End Love Songs and river woman to critical acclaim. North End Love Songs won the Governor General's Literary Award for poetry in 2013.
Vermette is also the writer of the graphic novel series A Girl Called Echo and a filmmaker. Her short documentary this river won the Coup de Coeur at the Montreal First Peoples Festival and a Canadian Screen Award.
The Strangers will be the first of two novels Vermette is publishing with Hamish Hamilton, an imprint of Penguin Random House.
