Simple and inexpensive ways to keep clutter at bay

If "messy" and "chaotic" are your closet's main descriptors, you're in good company. By default, closet space seems to resemble a discarded pile at a warehouse sale. High heels, baseball caps and limited shelving all lead to your favourite pieces being tossed in baskets. And while we can't all have designer walk-in closets that resemble Carrie Bradshaw's, we can make our storage space a little more neat and tidy. No matter the size of your space, when your clothes and accessories have a home, it makes dressing a dream and mornings way easier. So here are some tried and tested hacks from the hosts of The Goods that will help organize, simplify and improve your closets for good.
Use crown moulding to organize your shoes
If you have a lot of shoes that refuse to stay paired up, this hack is for you. Crown molding is only about $1.80 per linear foot, and you can even have it cut when you purchase it. This is a great way to display your shoes and perfect for if you don't have a closet deep enough for extra shelving. Opt for different moulding thicknesses based on heel height, but don't try screwing this to a door — your shoes will fly off when you open it.
Here's what you'll need:
- Crown molding, precut to desired length
- Screws
- Screw driver
- Level
- Paint to match the walls
Here's how to do it:
1. Place your crown molding against the wall, ensuring that it's level.
2. Screw it to the wall.
3. Paint over the screws.
4. Hang your shoes!
Turn your average magazine rack into a purse organizer
It's hard to store clutches and other small bags without just throwing them in a pile. Instead, use magazine and filing stands to organize them and keep them upright. You can even paint them to match your closet and they'll blend right in.
Use shower curtain rings outside of the bathroom
Instead of throwing them in a basket, hang up ball caps and belts with shower curtain rings. This helps save precious shelf space that's always so cluttered. Practical and economical, and you can even use this hack to hang up other items like scarves or bras.
Keep clothes crease-free by folding over a hanger
Hanging a sweater without it getting wrinkled, creased or stretched in the shoulders can be very tricky. Here is a folding method using a non-slip hanger that will keep your sweaters happy and free of hanger bumps.
Here's how to do it:
1. Fold your sweater in half.
2. Take your hanger and line it up so that the hook part is in the centre of the triangle formed by the sweater's armpit.
3. Fold the sleeve down.
4. Fold the body of the sweater down.
5. Lift!
Freshen your closet with scented sachets
Once your closet is organized, you'll want it to smell as good as it looks. So here is how to make simple scented sachets to help freshen up your closet, or even your sock drawer.
Here's what you'll need:
- Sachets or any other porous fabric bag
- Rice
- Essential oil
- Ribbon or string for tying
Here's how to do it:
1. Mix rice with a few drops of the essential oil of your choice.
2. Fill the sachet up halfway.
3. Tie closed with a ribbon. Done!
