Baby beluga born in B.C. Aquarium
A beluga whale gave birth at Vancouver Aquarium Saturday night
A baby beluga whale was born at the Vancouver Aquarium Saturday night as about 200 spectators watched.
It was the second calf born to a 14-year-old white beluga named Aurora. Aurora first gave birth in 1995 to a female named Qila.
Qila was the first beluga conceived and born in captivity in Canada.
It's still not known yet whether this new baby is a boy or a girl, and it's considered bad luck to name the baby whale too early.
The newborn was reported to be happily swimming alongside its mom. Aquarium official planned to watch over the mother and child over the next 24 hours to see if Aurora is nursing her baby.
This latest addition to the Vancouver Aquarium becomes its sixth beluga whale.
