A chihuhua from Chilliwack, B.C., is being commended by animal-rights organization PETA after saving an eight-year-old girl from a pitbull last week.

When a neighbour's pit bull attacked Jenna Desrochers, 8, on Tuesday, Honey — a four-year-old chihuahua — drew the attack dog away.

The girl was badly injured, requiring hours of surgery and hundreds of stitches.

On Friday, PETA announced it was giving Honey the "Small Dog, Big Hero" award, which comes with a doggie bag of vegan dog treats, a harness and a toy.

"Every dog who finds a loving home is fortunate — but, as Honey demonstrated, so are the families who earn the love of a cherished companion," said PETA executive vice president Tracy Reiman.

"PETA hopes Honey's selflessness and bravery will remind everyone of the many rewards of sharing our lives with animal companions — and the importance of valuing their devotion by becoming the best guardians possible."
