Port Moody fire forces dozens out of their homes

Fire at a cooperative housing complex in Port Moody has forced dozens of residents into the street and is causing traffic throughout the area to be rerouted.

Fire crews say they responded to the fire at the Mountainview Co-op at 902 Clarke Road shortly after noon Wednesday. 

Insp. Ken MacDonald said the fire is still active, but has been contained, and crews are expected to remain on scene for several hours. 

Clarke Road has been closed between Glenayre Drive and Seaview Road and detours have been put in place, said the City of Port Moody on Twitter. It also said only one of two buildings has been affected. 

The housing complex is home to 219 apartment units occupied by a mix of seniors, young adults and families.

Displaced residents can go to the Kyle Centre in Port Moody for emergency services. 

The city told residents they may see water discolouration from their taps due to the high water demand from the firefighter effort.
