About two hundred people came out on Saturday for the first ever Fraser Valley Pride parade in Abbotsford, B.C., a city with deep religious roots.

"Growing up as a kid, I never really realized that they were gay people in this town. It was really hidden," said organizer Angela Ostrikoff.

Participants in Saturday's pride parade were thankful for the support they are getting, but say acceptance is still a challenge.

"Much of my fear of coming out was the fear of how my church would react," said Todd Hauptman, who marched in the parade. "I was constantly confronted with negative attitudes."
