1 person killed at New Westminster worksite, police say

New Westminster Police and WorkSafeBC are investigating an accident involving a a tractor-trailer that killed one person Friday morning at a worksite in Queensborough.

"Preliminary information indicates a worker was struck by a vehicle," a WorkSafeBC spokesperson wrote in an email to CBC said of the incident at 400 Ewen Avenue.

Police said in a statment they were called to the scene at approximately 8:30 a.m. PT.

"This is a tragic event and our thoughts are with the family of this individual," said media relations officer Sgt Jeff Scott.

"We have a large team of investigators working together to determine how this happened, but we are still in the early stages at this point."

Jordan Atkins, the vice-president of Western Transloading Corp., which operates the facility, said the worker was a driver picking up a container on behalf of delivery company TBC Group.

Atkins said there were no witnesses and the incident occurred in a three-metre space between a building and a view of the surveillance camera.

"We were notified of the situation when one of the drivers came and alerted us that someone had been injured. We called police. The ambulance showed up. A couple of our employees here tried to resuscitate him and were unsuccessful," Atkins said.

"What I do know of the driver who passed away is he's extremely experienced. He's been in the industry for more than 19 years from what I understand."

Police say their criminal investigations and collision investigation teams are on scene, along with commercial vehicle safety and enforcement personnel.
