No help from Canada: shot B.C. man's son

The son of a Penticton, B.C., man shot in Mexico this week says Canadian Foreign Affairs officials have done almost nothing to help his family.
The son of a Penticton, B.C., man shot in Mexico this week says Canadian Foreign Affairs officials have done almost nothing to help his family.

"I don't even really know what they're for," Adriano DiLorenzo said Thursday of officials in Ottawa.

"All they kept telling me is they have nothing to do with anything. I wanted an armed escort from the hospital to the airport, and they said all they could do was give me names of security companies."

DiLorenzo told radio station CKIQ he's now working with his father's insurance company to try to get his parents home.

Mike DiLorenzo was shot in the leg Sunday when he was hit by a stray bullet in what police suspect was a gang-related shooting in a tourist area of Mazatlan. Police say the intended target was a 25-year-old Mexican man who was passing by on a motorcycle. The man, who was reportedly involved in the drug trade, died from gunshot wounds

DiLorenzo was wounded as he threw his wife to the ground to protect her.

Adriano DiLorenzo said his father tells him he's getting good care in a Mexican hospital but that he just had a blood transfusion and isn't stable enough to travel home yet.

Adriano said that despite the shooting, his father has said he would vacation in Mexico again.
