See what Calgary's new events centre might look like

New renderings of Calgary's events centre, set to be built in Victoria Park, were released this week. 

The new renderings replace ones that showed up on the city website in August. During the summer, it was reported the City of Calgary and the Flames ownership would each pay an additional $12.5 million for the new arena, and that the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) was no longer overseeing the project.

The event centre project is expected to go before the Calgary Planning Commission in November, but a specific date has not been set yet. 

At last report to council in July, construction was said to be slated to start in January.

The arena will be designed by local firm Dialog and global firm HOK. 

Dialog is known in Calgary for its work on the Central Library and for the Calgary Cancer Centre, now under contruction near the Foothills hospital. 

The firm also worked on the ICE District project in Edmonton, which fused that city's new arena to a larger mixed-use plan. 

HOK has plenty of projects under its belt, including ongoing work to refurbish and expand the Centre Block of Parliament in Ottawa.

Some aren't impressed with how the events centre project is going. 

Former councillor Druh Farrell tweeted Friday that "the current arena proposal lacks imagination, breaks basic planning rules, and will do irreparable damage to the neighbourhood." 

Josh White, acting director of Calgary growth strategies for the City of Calgary, said people need to look at all angles of the building. 

Peter Oliver, president of the Beltline Neighbourhoods Association, tweeted that since the CMLC was cut out of the project, it has "quickly gone from lacklustre to civic disgrace." 

The project was halted over escalating costs earlier this year but then both sides agreed to pay more. 

The arena is now projected to cost $608.5 million.
