2 families included in string of random attacks in downtown Calgary
Police say 29-year-old man faces multiple charges
Calgary police say they have charged a man following five random attacks downtown and the injury of a police officer.
Police became aware of the series of attacks at about 7 p.m. on Wednesday when officers reviewed closed-circuit television footage of a possible unrelated hit and run.
While reviewing that footage, police said, they saw a man approach a family walking along Macleod Trail S.E., between Eighth and Ninth avenues S.E. Police said that man hit one of the male members of the family several times.
The same security camera footage showed that a few minutes later, a man and woman left the Arts Commons building and were walking toward Macleod Trail S.E. when a stranger approached, police said.
Police said the suspect pointed a finger gun at the man before striking him. The man and woman were able to get away, police say.
Shortly after, the culprit approached another couple walking northbound on Macleod Trail S.E. He attacked the man, striking him in the face.
The assailant then ran at another man, police said. Police said he pushed that man to the ground.
The victim then got up and attempted to flee, running into traffic and was nearly struck by cars, police said.
Around 7:20 p.m., the suspect approached a family who were leaving Olympic Plaza, walking southbound on Macleod Trail S.E. Police said he struck a male family member in the face. Police said the family defended themselves and reported the incident.
While reviewing CCTV footage, officers saw the assailant go into the Arts Commons building, where they found him. During the arrest, one officer was injured and taken to hospital, police said. The officer has since been released from hospital.
Police have charged a 29-year-old man with one count of mischief, two counts of resisting arrest and one count of assaulting a police officer. He is in police custody.
Police have spoken with some but not all of the victims. They're looking for anyone who was involved or who may have witnessed the attacks to come forward.
