A warrant for arrest has been issued in connection to a possible hate crime in northwest Calgary.

The incident happened last September in the 700 block of Northmount Drive N.W.

A man threatened to kill a Jewish woman who was with her two young children, police said.

The threats were not provoked and they appeared to be connected to the woman's religion, police said.

Police are looking for 23-year-old Dylan Jamison Shaughnessy.

He is white, six feet tall and weighs about 190 pounds.

Judy Shapiro, the associate executive director of The Calgary Jewish Federation, says educating young people is very important in the fight against hate crimes.

"We always have to send the message to the public that hate is unacceptable," she said. "That the Calgary that we want to live in is a society where everyone is free to practice their religion; free to be who they are without fear of reprisal of who they are."

She estimates her organization has educated more than 50,000 high school students on this issue over the last 30 years.
