Traffic disruptions on Deerfoot Trail expected to last days after semi hits northeast overpass

Calgary officials say traffic on Deerfoot Trail will be disrupted for at least the next two days after a semi truck pulling construction equipment struck the 32nd Avenue N.E. overpass. 

Carole Henke, spokesperson for the Calgary Fire Department, said an excavator on the semi's flatbed hit the underside of the bridge Thursday morning, sending chunks of concrete onto Deerfoot Trail. 

"The good news is that there are no injuries," she said. 

Initially, two lanes of southbound Deerfoot were closed as crews cleared the scene. As of 2 p.m., one lane has since reopened. 

The 32nd Avenue overpass remains closed in both directions, although the exit ramps are accessible. While the bridge is closed, Alberta Transportation will assess the structure's integrity, city officials said. 

"The emergency lane closures are in place so debris can be cleared from the road and the underside of the structure," Alberta Transportation said, in a statement. 

The Calgary Police Service said officers will assist with traffic control while the bridge is being inspected.

CPS told CBC News that the driver of the truck has been issued two mandatory court summonses, for careless driving and operation of a commercial vehicle in a prohibited manner.

Police expect traffic to be disrupted on southbound Deerfoot Trail approaching the overpass for at least 48 hours. 

They recommended motorists avoid the area and find alternative routes.
