Kijiji ad for Edmonton's 'City of Champions' sign posted by Flames fans

A couple of Calgary Flames fans decided to have some fun with supporters of the Oilers by posting an ad on Kijiji for Edmonton's "City of Champions" sign.

A couple of Calgary Flames fans decided to have some fun with supporters of the Edmonton Oilers.

Jason Stang and some friends posted an ad to Kijiji to sell Edmonton's "City of Champions" sign at the city limits.

The ad said the sign isn't of any use to the owners anymore.

"This sturdy, purpose-built municipality sign features disco-era font signage, bolted to slabs of brownish exposed aggregate concrete. The abstract skyline backdrop is a stylistic throwback to the 80s, when the bottom portion of the sign was last relevant," said the post.

"Sign is weather-proof and designed to withstand snow, wind, rain, and drive-by laughter."

Stang says the ad got a lot of hits, but no big bites.

"We got offered a ham sandwich," he said. "That was the highest offer — a ham sandwich with no mayonnaise. A lot of people just love it. It was funny and it was all in fun."

The low offers may have something to do with the difficulty in removing the sign. The ad even admitted the purchase would be “Pick up only. Backhoe recommended.”

Kijiji pulled the ad Wednesday afternoon, but the friends have now put in on Craigslist.

Stang said as a hockey fan he feels the misery of Edmonton fans. The team is currently last in the Pacific Division with 16 losses.

"When you're winning you get to boast," said Stang with a smile. "When you are losing you should be prepared to take your licks."

There was some talk of changing Edmonton's easily-recognizable "City of Champions" signs with something new in September, but city council decided it had bigger priorities.
