Former Calgary basketball coach faces more sex assault charges after another teen comes forward

A former Calgary basketball coach who was charged in connection with the sexual assault of a teenage boy earlier this year is facing additional charges after a second alleged victim was identified, police said in a release Thursday.

Sean Maheu, 39, was first charged in January after an alleged victim — who was 14 years old when he joined Genesis Basketball in 2016 — reported to police in November 2020 that he had been sexually assaulted several times by the team's coach.

Maheu was charged with sexual assault, sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching and sexual exploitation.

On Nov. 10, police laid new charges based on a complaint from another male who alleged that starting in 2018, when he was 16 years old, he was sexually assaulted on multiple occasions by Maheu. He claims it happened when Maheu was employed as his youth worker in a program with Hull Services.

The new charges are of sexual assault and sexual exploitation.

Maheu is set to appear in court on Dec. 16.

"We acknowledge that it can be very confusing for a young person experiencing exploitation by someone in a position of trust," said Staff Sgt. Michelle Doyle with the Calgary Police Service's sexual assault investigative unit. 

"In this instance, the victim reported assaults that began in 2018, and we want to ensure people are aware that there is no time limit for victims to report a sexual assault in Canada."
