CBC journalists win multiple CAJ, RTDNA awards

CBC News scooped up several awards on Saturday recognizing national and regional journalism on topics including the Temporary Foreign Workers program, the controversial use of public resources by former Alberta premier Alison Redford and live coverage of 2014's National War Memorial and Parliament Hill shooting.

CBC journalists scooped up several awards on Saturday honouring national and regional work, including multiple awards given to CBC Edmonton for a series of stories that exposed the controversial use of public resources by former premier Alison Redford.

At the Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) national conference in Halifax, CBC picked up four awards, with the Don McGillivray Award for investigative journalism going to CBC Edmonton's Charles Rusnell and Jennie Russell for "Aura of Power," their work on Redford. Their series also won the top prize in the community broadcast category.

In the Open Broadcast News division, the team of Enza Uda, Kathy Tomlinson and Robb Douglas from CBC's The National won for "Foreign Workers – McJobs."

CBC also took home the CWA Canada/CAJ Award for labour reporting, which was shared by Carla Turner, Dave Seglins, Gord Westmacott, Heather Evans, Jeremy MacDonald and John Nicol for their work "Rail Fatigue" on CBC Radio's World Report and The Current.

More awards

At the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) conference in Toronto on Saturday, CBC won several network and national awards for journalism.

Linden MacIntyre, the former host of CBC's the fifth estate, was honoured with the RTDNA's Lifetime Achievement Award. The Gord Sinclair Award for live special events went to CBC Radio's World Report and The Current for their Parliament Hill shooting special coverage.

CBCNews.ca won two awards for online coverage: The Charlie Edwards Award for spot news coverage of the National War Memorial and Parliament Hill shootings, and the Ron Laidlaw Award for continuing coverage for its reporting from Liberia on the Ebola crisis.

Coast-to-coast honours

CBC took home regional awards from coast to coast.

CBC Nova Scotia was honoured with the Dave Rogers Award for long television feature in a small or medium market for A Day in the Life of Nova Scotia, while CBC Vancouver's The Early Edition radio show took the large market long feature award for All in the Family.

CBC Montreal won the large market digital media award for its website.

CBC was also given two U.S.-based Edward R. Murrow Awards. CBC Toronto won the breaking news award for large market television for its coverage of the attacks at the National War Memorial and Parliament Hill, while CBC Edmonton added to its honours for its "Aura of Power" series.

"Not only do our awards demonstrate our ability to work together across media lines but across departmental lines, too," said a joint statement from Jennifer McGuire, the general manager and editor in chief of CBC News and regional centres, and Cindy Witten, the interim executive director of English radio services.
