Coun. Sohi not running for mayor's chair
Edmonton councillor cites need for experience on upcoming council
Coun. Amarjeet Sohi will not join the race for the mayor's office in Edmonton's municipal election this fall, citing a need for experience on the next council.
"With the departure of Mayor (Stephen) Mandel and a few of my colleagues considering retirement and others considering a run for the mayor’s chair, the consistency of strong leadership and experience is at risk," Sohi told a news conference Tuesday.
Sohi said he will run for a third term as councillor for Ward 12.
"The presence of my voice at council might be more important than ever as we continue the work of current council to build a dynamic and forward-looking city," he said.
Coun. Kerry Diotte is already campaigning for the job, while councillors Karen Leibovici and Don Iveson say they are considering joining the race as well.
Mandel rejected a fourth term as mayor last week.
