Thousands of Muslims in Edmonton marked the end of Ramadan with prayer and services at the Northlands Expo Centre Wednesday morning.

Similar prayer ceremonies were held at 10 other centres in the city.

Eid al-Fitr is a holiday marking the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.

Eid is one of the two most important holidays in the Muslim calendar, said Masood Peracha, chair of the Edmonton Council of Muslim Communities.

The sermon at the Expo Centre sent a message of brotherhood, charity, forgiveness and peace, Peracha said.

"We all know there are a number of different conflict zones throughout the world that sometime spills over into our part of the world unfortunately," he said.
