After an early morning truck rollover on the QEW, police say a nine-year-old boy from Hamilton has died.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Sgt. Kerry Schmidt told CBC News officers were called to the westbound lanes of the QEW at the Bronte Road exit in Oakville, Ont., "just after midnight" Monday for a "single vehicle pick-up truck rollover collision."

Schmidt said there were three people in the vehicle, the nine-year-old, his father, a 38-year-old Hamilton man who was driving the car, and the driver's brother, a 28-year-old man.

He said the boy was ejected from the vehicle and taken without vital signs to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead. His father was taken to hospital with serious injuries. The 28-year-old was not injured.

In a post to X at 1:37 a.m. Monday, Schmidt said the westbound QEW was closed at Bronte Road due to the collision. The post showed a picture of a pickup truck in the ditch at the side of the highway, which has since reopened.

Schmidt said the driver did not appear to be impaired.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt explains what police know about the rollover that killed a nine-year-old boy early Monday morning on the QEW near Bronte Road in Oakville, Ont.

"We're certainly looking into fatigue as to potential factor in this collision," he said.

"I know they had come back from some distance, I'm not sure how far away, returning back home."

Schmidt also said both the child and the 38-year-old may have not been wearing seatbelts.

"We do believe that the other male passenger was wearing a seat belt and he's the one without any injuries at all," added Schmidt.

He also said it does not appear as though weather and road conditions played a role in the collision.

"The investigation is ongoing," said Schmidt.
