Bars open extra hour in Winnipeg for FIFA World Cup, jazz festival
Winnipeg bars and restaurants will be able to serve liquor for an extra hour — until 3 a.m. — during the FIFA Women's World Soccer Cup and the Winnipeg Jazz Festival in June for the benefit of those "enjoying Winnipeg's hospitality," the Liquor and Gaming Authority of Manitoba said on Wednesday.
An LGA statement said the extension would apply to liquor licencees during the period World Cup Games are in Winnipeg from June 8 to 16 and during the Festival, which takes place from June 11 to 21. The order also provides for an additional hour of clearing time until 4 a.m.
It said the "blanket" extension was intended to accommodate "these international tourism events when many visitors — including teams, musicians, family members and fans from around the world — will be enjoying Winnipeg's hospitality"
All liquor service licensees wishing to extend service hours during these periods, it said, must notify the LGA.
The LGA also authorized an extension until 3 a.m. during the Winnipeg Jets' short-lived Stanley Cup playoff run last month against the Anaheim Ducks.
