Dignitaries from various levels of government, as well as sponsors and FIFA officials, formally opened the Winnipeg stop on Friday morning.
But it was the smiling and laughing of three youth soccer teams on hand for the kickoff that suggested this World Cup event is something special.
Fans can visit the tent and the trophy from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
Twenty-four nations are vying for the top prize in matches across Canada starting June 6.
The tournament comes to Winnipeg in exactly one month, when the first of four match days will be played at Investors Group Field on June 8.
