A Manitoba cow's escape from a livestock yard Monday triggered a prolonged police pursuit through the streets of Brandon, the province's second-largest city.

Just before noon, the animal got loose from a stockyard and took off running, police said.

Officers in cruiser cars and animal-control workers followed close behind but were forced to give chase for more than 40 blocks.

'[She] did not want to get caught.'—Brody Allen

Local radio personality Brody Allen said he was eating his lunch when he saw the large bovine scurry by his office window, followed closely by law-enforcement officers.

"The cow just booked it as fast as it could … and in behind it in pursuit was the animal control," he said. "[She] did not want to get caught, let me tell you that."

No living thing was injured in the chase, which ended on the western outskirts of the city when the cow was corralled.

Brandon is 250 kilometres west of Winnipeg.
