A total of 1,275 angels have broken a Guinness world record in Winnipeg.

People were asked to show up Tuesday morning wearing white, along with a halo and wings at the Mulvey School playground, across from Misericordia Health Centre.

Germany held the previous record for the most people dressed as angels at 1,039.

The Misericordia Health Centre Foundation's Angel Squad organized the gathering as part of the kick-off to its annual fundraising drive.

"This year, to celebrate our 20th anniversary we decided to try to fight for the Guinness record. We invited everybody in the community — employees, young people from nearby schools. It's really great," said Rachel Dacquay, the resident care manager at Misericordia Place, a personal care home run by the health centre.

Cassandra Strong was there with wings on because her mother works at the hospital and she wanted to be part of history.

"To be part of something big for our city to be here with my sister to be here for the little one for the event, for the occasion for the memory," Strong said.

Angels waved to morning commuters on the Sherbrook side of the health centre this week. On Dec. 2-3, from 7 a.m. until 9 a.m., a parking lot will be turned into a loop where drivers can drop off donations in exchange for a Starbucks coffee or hot chocolate.

The donations are used to "add to services for our residents, our patients, our clients," said Dacquay.
