A woman was airlifted to hospital in critical condition after a multiple-vehicle crash involving two semi-trailers on a major route in east Winnipeg Friday morning.

Officers were called to Lagimodiere Boulevard and East Mint Place, close to the Royal Canadian Mint, around 10:20 a.m., after a passenger vehicle and two semi-trailers were involved in a collision, Winnipeg police said.

A woman who was involved in the crash was taken to hospital by STARS air ambulance in critical condition. A man, who was also injured during the collision, was taken to hospital by paramedics, police said in a Friday afternoon news release.

North and southbound lanes of Lagimodiere were initially closed between Fermor Avenue and Abinojii Mikanah, police said earlier Friday, but southbound lanes on Lagimodiere Boulevard have since reopened.

Emergency crews were expected to remain on the scene for the rest of Friday afternoon. Police advised motorists to drive with caution when driving through the area or use alternate routes.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Anyone with information or dash cam footage of the collision is asked to contact the Winnipeg Police Service's traffic division at 204-986-7085 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477 (TIPS).
