A section of Stony Mountain Institution remains cordoned off on Monday while RCMP investigate the death of a 53-year-old inmate over the weekend.

Prison staff found Duane Edward Taylor unresponsive in his cell on Saturday.

Efforts to revive him were not successful, according to corrections officials.

Stonewall RCMP were called to the prison at about 10:15 p.m. Saturday. Police say they are treating the man's death as a homicide.

Taylor had been serving a sentence for first-degree murder since 1982.

Guy Langlois, an assistant warden with Stony Mountain, told CBC News no changes will be made to the prison's procedures or policy in light of Taylor's death.

Langlois said the area where the incident happened has been cordoned off while RCMP investigate, but inmates' schedules and visits have not been disrupted.
