Police fatally shoot man after chase in Lachine
1 dead, 2 injured in separate overnight incidents
Quebec's bureau of independent investigations (BEI) is investigating after a 27-year-old man died during a police operation in Lachine early Thursday.
The events began in Côte Saint-Luc around 12:40 a.m., when members of the town's public security team responded to a call about a man in crisis, according to preliminary information provided to the bureau.
The man allegedly got into a vehicle and drove toward the security agents. At that moment, Montreal police showed up and initiated a chase.
They drove into Lachine, where the driver allegedly tried to hit a worker at a construction site near the intersection of St-Joseph Boulevard and George V Avenue.
The man's car and the police cruiser collided. The officers got out of the car, and the man allegedly accelerated his vehicle toward them.
Police opened fire and hit the man. He was pronounced dead shortly after.
Five BEI investigators were dispatched to the scene and will work to confirm what happened.
For only the second time in its existence, the BEI had to call on the Sûreté du Québec to provide four investigators who will work under the bureau's supervision for the probe.
Thursday's is the fourth investigation opened by the bureau in a week, explained spokesperson Martin Bonin-Charron, making the extra help necessary.
The SQ is also providing a forensic identification technician and an accident reconstruction specialist to assist with the investigation, which is normal procedure.
2 others shot in nearby, unrelated incident
In a separate incident that occurred just blocks away, two people were shot in the lower body but are expected to recover.
According to Montreal police Const. Benoit Boisselle, a man in his 30s was shot just after midnight near the intersection of Notre-Dame Street and 7th Avenue.
Police don't yet know the motive for the shooting and haven't made any arrests.
They are hoping to interview the victims as soon as possible.
Despite the fact that the two incident occurred in the same area, they are not connected.
