Luka Magnotta trial's full jury selected

A full jury has been selected for the trial of Luka Magnotta after four new jurors were added today.

Magnotta faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, in connection with the slaying of Concordia University student Jun Lin.

The trial is scheduled to begin Sept. 29

Today's additions include a translator, a butcher shop administrator and a geologist. The jury consists of seven men and nine women.

The last and final juror selected is an anglophone man who works as an auditor. He is the second substitute juror.​

Lawyers opted for a 16-person jury as a safeguard, with jurors 15 and 16 as substitutes won’t be required to sit in on the trial unless one of the other jurors is unable to fulfil his or her duties.

Jurors 13 and 14 will take part in the trial and hear all of the testimony and evidence, but will not decide on the verdict unless they are required to replace one of their colleagues.

Bilingualism and impartiality assessed

The court has interviewed nearly 100 candidates this week, screening for bilingualism and impartiality.

Magnotta has been present during the interviews, and defence lawyer Luc Leclair occasionally consulted with him before approving or rejecting potential jurors.

Among the candidates interviewed today was a journalist who said he knew too much about the story, a hairdresser who had watched what Leclair refers to as the "so-called murder video," and a telecommunications company employee who said he had never heard of the much-publicized case.

They were all turned away.
