New $50M promenade links Mount Royal to the Old Port

The city of Montreal has unveiled a new promenade as part of its 375th anniversary that will allow people to walk from Mount Royal to the St. Lawrence River at the Old Port.

The 3.8-kilometre walkway "traces the pedestrian link between Montreal's two natural icons: the St. Lawrence River to the south and Mount Royal to the north," reads a statement from the city.

The walkway begins at the foot of the mountain, on Pine Avenue. It then runs along:

• McTavish Street.
• Sherbrooke Street.
• McGill College Avenue.
• Ste-Catherine Street.
• Place Phillips and Côté du Beaver Hall.
• Square Victoria.
• McGill Street.
• Place D'Youville.
• De la Commune.

Parts of the promenade feature wider sidewalks and pedestrian crosswalks, rest areas for pedestrians and more plants and greenery.

The project cost about $50 million.

'Exactly what it was before': opposition

Montreal's opposition party says Montrealers are not getting their money's worth.

"It's exactly what it was before," said Projet Montreal councillor Luc Ferrandez, pointing to McTavish Street.

"Now there are no cars parked here for today's announcement, but once the cars are back, it will be exactly what it was before. What a lack of a "wow' factor...We are extremely disappointed."
