Quebec's independent police watchdog, known by its French acronym BEI, launched an investigation Sunday morning into the death of a person after a police intervention in Trois-Rivières.

Local police received a 911 call around 8:59 p.m. Saturday regarding a person in distress inside a residence, according to initial reports received by the BEI. When police arrived at the scene, they allegedly made contact with the caller outside the residence.

Officers then allegedly entered the residence and noted that the person in distress was in possession of a firearm, according to a statement released by the BEI.

Police then allegedly opened fire on the person and hit them, the BEI said.

The person was taken to hospital where they were pronounced dead.

Five BEI investigators have been assigned to the case.
