A school-specific COVID-19 dashboard on the way, N.B. government promises
Province hasn't revealed cases per school or number of cases in children under 12, who can't get vaccinated
After weeks of refusing to provide basic information about COVID-19 cases in schools, the New Brunswick government has decided to set up a school-specific dashboard "in the coming days."
In a response to repeated requests for a breakdown of case numbers per school, Department of Education spokesperson Danielle Elliott said the province has put together a team to report on school outbreaks.
"In the coming days, a new dashboard will be available on the Healthy and Safe Schools website," she said in an email.
Elliott did not say if a breakdown of cases per school was going to be part of the dashboard. The province also hasn't been telling the public how many of the school cases are children under 12, who are not eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine.
"We're still in the process of finalizing, but [the dashboard] will include as much information as we are able to accurately provide on a routine basis, while protecting the privacy of our students," she said.
More than a quarter of schools have had COVID-19 cases
Eighty-one schools and 44 child-care centres have had one or more COVID-19 cases since school started Sept. 7.
By comparison, 100 cases were reported in 50 schools last year, according to the province.
The rise in cases comes as New Brunswick faces its worst COVID-19 wave yet, with record daily case counts and deaths.
The affected schools account for 27 per cent of the 320 schools in the province.
According to information shared by the province in news releases, the minimum number of cases across all schools is 211.
In October alone, 41 schools and 20 child-care operations had one or more cases.
Since Sept. 13, there have been about 418 COVID cases in people under the age of 19,
The area with the most exposure is Zone 1, or the Moncton region. There have been at least 78 exposures in the Moncton area, concentrated around the city centre. In second place is Zone 3, or the Fredericton region, where a Perth-Andover wave closed down learning in person for weeks.
Here's a map of schools and daycare operations affected, along with the minimum possible number of cases found in each one:
In the beginning of the schools year the province removed mask mandates and most other COVID-19 restrictions in the community.
On Sept. 20, officials brought back some restrictions, after 20 schools were exposed. Schools went back to classroom "bubbles," more physical distancing between groups, and assemblies were cancelled.
