2.1-cent drop at gas pumps; home-heating fuel also down
Newfoundland and Labrador's petroleum regulator ordered another cut Thursday in the price of gasoline, although some retailers have been already been selling fuel for less.
The Public Utilities Board lowered the maximum price of all grades of gas by 2.1 cents per litre, although the drop may be slightly less in some pricing zones because of rounding for taxes.
For instance, Thursday's setting means that a gas station on the Avalon Peninsula – where prices are cheapest – can charge no more than $1.204 for a litre of self-serve unleaded gas.
But consumers in much of St. John's have been paying less than that through the week.
At price-leading Costco on Tuesday night, for instance, members were paying $1.099 per litre.
Many stations in the east end lowered their prices in recent days to stay competitive.
Meanwhile, diesel prices dropped 3.3 cents a litre.
Thursday's settings brought good news for consumers who use fuel to heat their homes.
Furnace oil dropped by 1.74 cents a litre. Stove oil was down by 2.94 cents a litre, while propane heating fuel dropped 1.2 cents per litre.
