On Saturday, Labrador's Guy Poole will lace up his running shoes and start a long trek.

He's walking from Deer Lake to Gander for the 10th annual Liz's Walk for Diabetes, in honour of Poole's late wife.

"The first walk started was a 200-kilometre walk and then I was supposed to hang up my shoes," said Poole.

It wasn't meant to be an annual event, but early on, Poole received a note from a little girl urging him to stay the course.

"The last thing she said in the note was, 'I hope you find a cure,'" said Poole.

"I wrote her a note back and the last thing I said in the note was that I'll keep walking until they find a cure or I can't walk anymore."

The walk has raised over $83,000 to date, and Poole has walked more than 2,000 kilometres over the 10 years.

Donations to Liz's Walk can be made at the Canadian Diabetes Association website.
