MusicNL: Sherman Downey and the Ambiguous Case up for awards
It could be a big weekend for a local group at this year's Music NL awards.
Corner Brook-based Sherman Downey and the Ambiguous Case are up for five Music NL awards this weekend.
They are Album of the Year, Group of the Year, Music Video of the Year, Pop Recording of the Year and Songwriter of the Year. It's a big finish to a big year for the band.
Nearly a year ago, the band's sophomore album, The Sun in Your Eyes, was released in this province. Since then, Downey said the band has been touring, pushing and promoting the record. The hard work paid off with five nominations.
"It's pretty overwhelming. Five years ago, six years ago, when we put out the first album, like all the songs are written kind of humbly in your own living room, or in the basement," said Downey.
"It's pretty overwhelming for it to get out of the house and then to get so much support within the province and outside of the province. I'm just very proud, very proud of it."
Downey remembers his first Music NL Awards Week in 2008 in Gander. Support which hasn't dwindled or died down since. A big deal for the band and himself to have Music NL show up in the city he calls home.
"Music NL is such a great support system for all the provincial musicians and they've been with us every step of the way," Downey said.
"To have it here in Corner Brook where we are all living right now, and to see the support that Music NL is bringing to the city and for our band in particular, with the five nominations, we are just really proud."
The awards will be handed out Sunday night at the Arts and Culture Centre in Corner Brook.
