A worker at Baffinland's Mary River iron mine site had to be medevaced to Ottawa this week, after suffering serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident happened on Sunday. According to Baffinland, a worker from southern Canada was struck when he tripped removing a plow hitch mast from a plow truck.

The employee suffered a fractured collarbone and a broken ankle.

The worker was medevaced to Iqaluit and subsequently to Ottawa for further treatment, said a spokeswoman for Baffinland in an email.

The mine's inspector was notified and regular operations were not affected.

An internal investigation into the incident is being conducted.

Last September, the Nunavut RCMP investigated the death of a worker at the mine. The RCMP concluded that it was the result of a workplace injury and the investigation was handed over to the coroner's office and the Workers' Safety and Compensation Commission.

The Mary River mine is located on the northern end of Baffin Island, about 160 kilometres southwest of the community of Pond Inlet, Nunavut.
