The Conservative candidate for the Northwest Territories in the upcoming federal election has resigned as mayor of Inuvik, N.W.T., effective yesterday, says the town's senior administrative officer.

Floyd Roland has resigned as mayor of Inuvik, N.W.T., effective yesterday, says the town's senior administrative officer.

In a news release issued Tuesday, Grant Hood said Roland informed the town council and staff of his decision on Monday.

Roland, a former N.W.T. premier, is the Conservative candidate for the Northwest Territories in the upcoming federal election.

Last week Roland said he would remain mayor while campaigning in the federal election. Then he said he would resign as mayor in September.

Inuvik's deputy mayor Jim McDonald will serve as acting mayor for the rest of the council's term. A municipal election will be held this fall.
