Mayors, councillors elected in some N.W.T. hamlets

Elections took place in 10 N.W.T. hamlets on Monday, with some mayor and council seats up for grabs.

Elections took place in 10 N.W.T. hamlets on Monday, with some mayor and council seats up for grabs.

Tsiigehtchic, the newest hamlet in the Northwest Territories, has elected a mayor for the first time. Shawn James Roland Van Loon received 32 votes, based on information posted by the returning officer on the hamlet's Facebook page. 

That was eight more votes than Charlene Blake received. Voter turnout was 55.5 per cent. 

People in Tsiigehtchic voted to became a hamlet this spring. 

Incumbent Mayor Danny Beaulieu also returned to his job in Fort Providence. 

Beaulieu received 170 votes over rival candidate Ronald Bonnetrouge, who received 71 votes.

Four people were also elected to Fort Providence's council on Monday: Alayna Krutko, Joyce McLeod, Louie Constant and Miranda Elleze. 

In Ulukhaktok's mayoral race, Pat Klengenberg won 51 votes, while Laverna Klengenberg received 46 votes, and Jack Akhiatak received eight. 

In Sachs Harbour, Donna Keogak got 21 votes to win the race for mayor. 

Keogak won over Warren Essau, who received 14 votes, Issiac Elanik, who received eight votes and Kyle Wolki who received four. 

Mayors were acclaimed in Enterprise, Fort Liard, Fort McPherson and Paulatuk.
