Justin Trudeau welcomes new Liberal government in Yukon
Yukon's Liberal Party won a majority government at last night’s election
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is welcoming the new Liberal government in Yukon, saying he is looking forward to working with the territorial government in "a spirit of co-operation and collaboration."
Sandy Silver is now one of eight Liberal Canadian first ministers; Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, British Columbia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador all have Liberal governments.
"On behalf of the Government of Canada, I offer my sincere congratulations to Sandy Silver and all Members of the Legislative Assembly on their electoral victory," stated Trudeau in a media release.
Yukon's Liberal Party won a majority government at last night's election, vaulting from third-party status in the legislature to oust the conservative Yukon Party after 14 years.
Leader Sandy Silver will become the territory's ninth premier, and the first from Yukon's original capital, Dawson City.
The party snagged 11 of the legislative assembly's 19 seats.
"I look forward to working with the new government of Yukon, in a spirit of co-operation and collaboration, to build a strong middle class, and a solid foundation for a sustainable economic future in the North," stated Trudeau.
"By working closely together, we can help create stronger communities, improve the well-being of Indigenous peoples, and address shared challenges."
The prime minister also took the time to thank outgoing Yukon premier Darrell Pasloski "for his contributions to the territory and to Canada."
"I wish him all the best in his future endeavours."
