A Halifax woman who volunteered to do errands for a 91-year-old woman and help her with other daily activities has been charged with defrauding her of more than $5,000.

Brenda Louise Clements, 65, was arrested Wednesday evening and appeared in Halifax provincial court Thursday.

Police say the alleged victim approached them on May 4 after she noticed "irregular financial activities" on her credit card statement.

"The suspect, several months ago, approached the victim at the local bingo hall and offered her help and assistance with the daily activities," Cst. Pierre Bourdages said.

Police launched a month-long investigation and say thousands of dollars were spent over a two-month period in Halifax. Police allege Clements used the card at ATMs, convenience stores and other retail outlets.

Bourdages said there is a possibility Clements has more victims, and asks members of the public to watch their bank statements.

"We do believe there may be more victims of Ms. Clements or other individuals that may prey on the elderly and vulnerable individuals," he said.

"So, we urge people people if they believe they've been taken by anybody for any amount of money … please let someone know what happened."
