A Wolfville council committee reversed course Tuesday and tentatively voted in support of an $80,000 donation to L'Arche Homefires.

The request will now be voted on at a full council meeting on May 18.

At a packed meeting Tuesday morning, the Nova Scotia town's committee revisited a request they had earlier turned down.

They voted to support a one-time donation from the reserve fund and to review the policies around such requests for large donations.

The money will help the organization for people with intellectual and physical disabilities complete its $2.8 million fundraising goal to refit an old church hall into a fully accessible workshop and meeting space.

L'Arche director Ingrid Blais said she's very pleased with the result and looks forward to the May 18 decision.

L'Arche Homefires has been in Wolfville since 1981. It employs about 60 people in Wolfville and many have intellectual or physical disabilities.

The current Applewicks gift shop has a steep staircase into a dark basement workshop, which is inaccessible for many people with physical disabilities.
