A Dartmouth, N.S., man with a history of sex offences has been charged with sexually assaulting a child known to him.

Halifax Regional Police said the assault is alleged to have occurred between June and September of this year.

Carl Richard Nielson, 76, was arrested and charged earlier this week.

The charges include sexual assault, sexual interference and breach of a prohibition order that prevented him from being around anyone under the age of 16.

Nielsen was convicted in April 2019 on two charges of sexual interference. He was sentenced to three years in prison for those offences.

Court records show he abused two girls over a 10-year period, ending in 2012. He knew the girls and was in a position of trust and authority over them. He initially denied the offences but eventually admitted to them to avoid having the girls face the trauma of a trial.

In January of last year, Nielson was granted day parole with conditions that included staying away from the victims and their families, and staying away from places children frequent. He was also placed on a curfew from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Nielsen is due in provincial court in Dartmouth next month to face the latest charges.
