High water levels have prompted officials to close the Chaudière Bridge starting at 6 a.m. on April 28.

The Chaudière Bridge over the Ottawa River closed at 6 a.m. Sunday due to high water levels.

Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) said the crossing is closed to both vehicles and pedestrians.

Traffic controls are installed at the intersection of Eddy and Laurier streets on the Gatineau, Que., side of the crossing, and at Booth Street and the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway on the Ottawa side, with officials on hand to direct traffic.

The bridge will remain closed until water levels recede enough to allow the crossing to be inspected, according to PSPC.

OC Transpo's Route 44 is using the Portage Bridge instead, meaning stops at Booth and Vimy Place and Eddy Street and rue Laurier are not in use.

The closest stops are now at the corner of Booth and the parkway in Ottawa and Terrasses de la Chaudière in Gatineau.

The Portage Bridge just to the east has non-flood related construction bringing it down to two lanes of traffic toward Gatineau during off-peak hours.
