Federal government matches province's $62M for Ottawa sewage project
City of Ottawa to pay for $71M balance of $195M sewage storage tunnel project
The federal government became the third level of government to fund a project aimed at preventing further sewage spills into the Ottawa River, with a $62 million pledge to help build two underground tunnels.
The two interconnected underground combined sewage storage tunnels are expected to provide additional storage of combined sewage to reduce overflows.
The $195-million project includes an east-west tunnel from LeBreton Flats to Stanley Park, and a north-south tunnel along Kent Street from Chamberlain Street to Wellington Street.
The provincial government has previously pledged $62 million to the same project, while the City of Ottawa will fund the balance, roughly $70 million.
The tunnel project is part of the city's larger Ottawa River Action Plan.
