Pamela George remembered as killers both move toward release
A Saskatchewan women's group says Pamela George will not be forgotten.
They made their statement as Alex Ternowetsky was granted day parole Thursday. Ternowetsky was one of two young men convicted of killing George in Regina five years ago. Stephen Kummerfield was granted day parole earlier this year.
Kripa SekHar of the Saskatchewan Action Committee for the Status of Women says the Pamela George case is a tragic example of how the justice system can fail women.
"Not just for Saskatchewan, but for women across the country, I think this case played a very significant role," SekHar says, "particularly when you consider that the justice system really does not play fairly for women, particularly aboriginal women, women who are poor, and women who are working the streets to make a livelihood. Certainly, there seems to be no recourse for justice. That became very evident during this particular trial."
Alex Ternowetsky says he knows many people in Saskatchewan are still angry with him. Ternowetsky will try to get a job in Toronto, and says he will not move back to Saskatchewan.
