The P.E.I. Department of Transportation has closed a road after a bridge was found burning in eastern P.E.I. Tuesday morning, just west of Souris.

RCMP received a report of the burning bridge on Grove Pine Road in Eglington shortly after 10 a.m. Police found smoke coming from the bridge. A local fire department came and extinguished the fire.

The wooden bridge is about three meters long. Police say there was no wiring or other possible sources of ignition in the area of the bridge, and the fire is considered suspicious.

The Transportation Department and the provincial fire marshal have been contacted to assist in the investigation and to assess the condition of the bridge.

Grove Pine Road is an unpaved rural road that is not maintained during the winter months.
