P.E.I. businessman Kevin Murphy has been named the Greater Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce entrepreneur of the year.

Murphy is the owner and president of Murphy Hospitality Group. The company has grown from a one-restaurant operation in 1980 to 12 food and beverage operations, three boutique hotels and the Prince Edward Island Brewing Company, and it's continuing to expand in the Maritimes.

According to the chamber, the award "recognizes an individual who truly exemplifies the entrepreneurial spirit in our community."

In a news release, chamber president Wendy Drake said Murphy "remains at the cutting edge in his respective industries and he is known as a generous and supportive mentor to many aspiring entrepreneurs."

His hotels and beer have won many awards.

Murphy will be honoured at the annual President's Excellence Awards on Nov. 4 at the Delta Prince Edward.

Individuals were nominated for the award by chamber members and the executive committee selected the winner.

Last year, the award went to businessman Kent Scales.
