Snow squall watch continues for much of P.E.I.

Prince Edward Islanders should be on the lookout for snow squalls Wednesday evening. Environment Canada has issued a snow squall watch for Queens County.

Strong and cold westerly winds blowing over the relatively warm waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence are likely to cause conditions favourable for the development of snow squalls Wednesday evening, according to the agency. 

It is warning Islanders conditions may become hazardous due to blowing snow and high winds resulting in poor visibility. 

Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate because of accumulating snow, the agency said. Drivers are urged to be prepared and exert caution on the roads. 

CBC P.E.I.'s meteorologist Jay Scotland said Islanders can expect up to 5 centimetres of snow in Queens and Kings counties. 

He said any significant accumulation of snow will be localized under persistent squalls.

Flurries are expected to taper off as winds ease on Thursday morning.
