A heat wave is expected to continue in Saskatchewan throughout the week and smoke is making its way across the province. Dr. Tania Diener, Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region's medical health officer, has some tips to ensure you don't overheat.

1. Stay inside

"If it's so warm, keep your children inside," Dr. Diener said. This may sound extreme, but with the temperatures around 30 C it is best to be in a place where it's cool. If you want to take your children out, Dr. Diener recommends staying away from when the sun is the warmest — between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

2. Keep hydrated

Dr. Diener said you shouldn't feel thirsty because you should be constantly drinking fluids. "Water is perfect, try and avoid caffeine as much as possible. Try to avoid alcohol because that dehydrates you even more," she said.

3. Use or find air conditioning

When the temperatures get this hot, the easiest way to stay cool and keep your temperature down is to turn on your air conditioner. If you don't have an air conditioner, Dr. Diener recommends going somewhere that does such as the public library or the mall.

4. Keep windows closed

Since smoke is an additional concern right now, Dr. Diener said to keep windows closed in your car and your home. If you have an air conditioner turn it to recirculate to avoid bringing the smokey outside air into your house.

5. Don't exercise outdoors

With the smoky conditions, avoid outdoor exercise completely. When the smoke dissipates, keep your exercise to early mornings and late evenings when it's cooler, Dr. Diener said.
