Mother of slain teen joins anti-violence campaign
The mother of a teenager who was stabbed to death at a party last month was out on the streets of Regina Thursday handing out purple ribbons.
Susan Martin's 19-year-old son Misha Pavelick died at an outdoor campsite near Regina Beach after being stabbed on May 20.
The ribbons are part of a campaign launched by another mother, Diane Bodnarchuk, whose son was stabbed last year. He survived.
Bodnarchuk said when she heard about Pavelick, she felt compelled to do something.
Martin said she's devastated her son died in such a violent manner and she wants others to be careful.
"I just want them to be safe and to know that … if they aren't safe somewhere, they have to find somewhere safe," she said.
More than a dozen of Pavelick's friends also took part in Thursday's campaign.
They said while ending violence isn't going to be easy, Pavelick's death has prompted them to speak out.
A second teenager, an 18-year-old, was hospitalized after a stabbing at the same long-weekend party. The man accused of that stabbing, Scott Robert Nelson, 20, appeared in court Thursday for a bail hearing.
The judge denied bail and he was been remanded in custody.
No one has been arrested in connection with Pavelick's death.
