Sudbury celebrates Stompin' Tom Connors on Saturday night with new music video

Sudbury paid tribute to its unofficial anthem turning Stompin' Tom's Sudbury Saturday Night into a new music video. The CBC's Olivia Stefanovich was at the Townhouse Tavern for the event and spoke to some of the people who took part.Dozens of people in Sudbury, Ont., stomped, danced and sang "Sudbury Saturday Night" this weekend for a new music video to commemorate Stompin' Tom Connors and his iconic song about the city. 

Phoenix Wilson was not born back then, but he still came with his parents to pay tribute to the beloved Canadian musician. 

"Because he was a part of history and he was a great songwriter," Wilson said. 

The free, family-friendly event was organized by the tavern, Downtown Sudbury and local businessman Colin Firth. 

Sudbury more than 'just bingo and Inco and drinking'

"I'm hoping that we can actually just show how Sudbury really can party, celebrate Stompin' Tom, but also send out a new image about our community as well," Firth said.

"We're not just bingo and Inco and drinking. We are a very cosmopolitan, world class community." 

People in Sudbury are still trying to turn a page on the elements of the song, tavern manager Paul Loewenberg said. 

"To me it's a snapshot of a very distant past, but it's flattering that one of the great songs by one of Canada's great songwriters is about us," Loewenberg said.

"I think it will always be a humbling reminder to us in Sudbury to stay true to our working roots and not take things for granted."

The completed music video premieres this coming Saturday night in Sudbury
