Man gunned down in Brampton driveway in targeted attack: Peel police
Another man in hospital, OPP investigating 2nd shooting in Caledon as linked
Police are investigating a link between two overnight shootings in the Greater Toronto Area after one man was fatally gunned down and another was hospitalized in what investigators are calling a targeted incident outside a home in Brampton.
Emergency services were first called to a residence on Odeon Street, in Brampton's north end, around 11:30 p.m. for reports of multiple gunshots.
Responding officers found two men with gunshot wounds, according to Peel police Sgt. Jennifer Trimble.
One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was taken to a trauma centre. His injuries are considered non-life threatening, Trimble said.
"We believe this was a targeted shooting," Trimble told reporters on Thursday.
It is still too early in the investigation to release any information about the deceased, she said.
Video captures moment man gunned down
Video obtained by CBC Toronto, which police have confirmed captures the moment the shooting happened, shows two men clearing snow off of a car in a driveway when a second vehicle pulls up next to them.
Two people then get out of the car, and one person starts firing as soon as the door opens. The gunfire is largely directed at one man in the driveway, who appears to be shot at over a dozen times as he falls to the ground while the second man runs out of frame.
Investigators are looking for a white, four-door sedan, which matches the car seen in the video. It is not known how many people were in the vehicle when the shooting happened, police say.
Over two dozen yellow evidence markers were placed around home and in the driveway Thursday. Bullet holes could also be seen in a car parked in the driveway, alongside what appeared to be blood in the snow.
Neighbour Gaetano Fronte told reporters at the scene that he was getting ready for bed around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday when he heard repeated bangs outside.
"I heard a whole magazine go off I think, like 10 or 12 shots, easily," he said.
Fronte ran downstairs and joined his parents at their windows, where he saw a man on the ground, behind a car.
"I also did see a man running up and down the driveway … he seemed a little panicked," Fronte said. "I also heard a woman screaming."
Fronte said he wouldn't have expected someone to be gunned down so close to his home in a suburban neighbourhood.
"I obviously don't like seeing this stuff in my neighbourhood," he said. "We're supposed to be safe, you know?"
OPP investigating 2nd incident
Ontario Provincial Police, meanwhile, say they are investigating a second shooting that happened in nearby Caledon around midnight as connected to the first incident.
It happened near a home on Centreville Creek Road, the OPP says, but no one was injured.
"Investigators suspect the incident is linked to a prior shooting in Brampton," police said in a social media post, adding that the OPP and Peel police are now working together as part of the investigation.
Centreville Creek Road will be closed between Healey Road and Mayfield Road for several hours while the investigation continues, investigators say.
Anyone with information about either shooting is being asked to contact police or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers.
